Weight Loss Journey
We believe that lasting weight loss requires more than just willpower or a prescription. That’s why our approach blends the short-term benefits of medications like semaglutide or tirzepatide with a deeper, holistic focus on healing the whole body. These medications can help jumpstart progress by improving blood sugar control and reducing appetite, but they’re not meant to be the end solution. Our goal is to use them as a supportive tool while we work on the root causes—like hormonal imbalances, gut dysfunction, inflammation, and lifestyle stressors. The ultimate outcome? A healthier metabolism, a stronger foundation, and a body that can maintain results naturally—without long-term dependency on medication.
What is Semaglutide vs Tirzepatide – What’s The Difference For Weight Loss?
Semaglutide, known under the brand names like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelus, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Semaglutide mimics the action of GLP-1, a hormone involved in appetite regulation. By activating GLP-1 receptors, Semaglutide reduces appetite, enhances feelings of fullness, and slows gastric emptying, which collectively contribute to weight loss.
• It is responsible for:
• Triggering insulin (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/22601-insulin) release from your pancreas (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/body/21743-pancreas): Insulin is an essential hormone that allows your body to use the food you eat for energy. It lowers the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. If you don’t have enough insulin, your blood sugar increases, leading to diabetes (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/7104-diabetes).
• Blocking glucagon secretion: Glucagon (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/22283-glucagon) is a hormone your body uses to raise your blood sugar levels when necessary. So, GLP-1 prevents more glucose from going into your bloodstream.
• Slowing stomach emptying: Slower digestion means that your body releases less glucose (sugar) from the food you eat into your bloodstream.
• Increasing how full you feel after eating (satiety): GLP-1 affects areas of your brain that processes hunger and satiety.
GLP-1 agonist medications work by mimicking this hormone. In medication terms, an agonist is a manufactured substance that attaches to a cell receptor and causes the same action as the naturally occurring substance. In other words, GLP-1 medications bind to GLP receptors to trigger the effects of the GLP-1 hormone.
Tirzepatide, branded as Mounjaro and Zepbound, takes a dual-action approach. It combines the effects of a GLP-1 receptor agonist with those of a GIP receptor agonist. GIP is another hormone involved in insulin secretion and energy metabolism. The dual agonism means Tirzepatide not only curbs appetite and enhances satiety like Semaglutide but also has an additional effect on energy expenditure and fat metabolism, offering a potentially more comprehensive weight management solution.
GIP is responsible for:
· Decreasing the secretion of stomach acid to protect the small intestine from acid damage.
· Reducing the rate at which food is transferred through the stomach.
· Inhibiting GI motility and secretion of acid.
· Stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas to maintain low blood sugar levels after eating.
Both medications have demonstrated substantial weight loss in clinical trials, but the extent of their effectiveness is a key differentiator. In various studies, participants taking Semaglutide experienced an average weight loss ranging from 10% to 25% of their body weight. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Semaglutide was linked to an average weight reduction of 14.9% over 68 weeks, a significant finding in the context of weight loss medications. Tirzepatide, in its clinical evaluations, has shown even more promising results. Initial studies indicate that it could lead to an average weight loss of approximately 15% to 30%. These numbers are notably higher than those associated with Semaglutide, suggesting that Tirzepatide might be the more potent option for weight reduction. However, as it is a newer medication, the long-term comparative effectiveness and safety profile require further investigating.
